4 Ways to Reduce Distracted Driving and Improve Fleet Safety

According to the National Safety Council, an estimated 26% of motor vehicle crashes are linked to cell phone use. Because drivers make more than 200 decisions during every mile traveled, distractions can often arise. During National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, recognized throughout April, be sure to spread the word and educate your drivers on the dangers of texting while driving. But don’t just stop there. If you really want to make a change, it’s important to continuously encourage and teach safe driving habits. Here are 4 ways to develop a strong safety culture and reduce distracted driving within your fleet:
- Implement a written safety policy: Create a written document emphasizing the importance of driver safety and clearly define your policies and procedures. Make sure to discuss the policies during company meetings and provide each employee with a copy of the document. This will help to set the ground rules and show your employees just show serious you are about safety.
- Utilize distracted driving technology: There are distracted driving solutions available that prevent talking, texting, emailing and surfing the web while driving. NexTraq DriveGuard® uses a non-pairing Bluetooth Trigger Unit coupled with a mobile application to prevent cell phone use while a vehicle is in motion. This is a surefire way to reduce distracted driving related accidents and improve company reputation.
- Provide ongoing driver safety training: It’s important that employees receive ongoing training on safety best practices. Online driver education courses allow employees to choose from a variety of self-paced courses, designed to improve driving skills. If distracted driving is a problem in your fleet, you can choose a session that will help to increase awareness of the dangers associated with inattentive driving.
- Develop a driver incentive program: Implement a program that rewards and recognizes employees for safe driving behaviors. Providing incentives and rewards can help to motivate employees to participate in the program. Celebrating employee achievements can also help to boost workplace morale and improve the overall safety culture of your company.
