How Are the New HOS Rules Affecting You?

It’s official. The new hours of service (HOS) regulations for all commercial vehicles has officially begun. The HOS rules took effect, Monday July 1st, 2013 and require truck drivers to sleep more and drive less. The new rules cap the average workweek of a driver at 70 hours, cutting 12 hours from the previous 82 hour workweek—and for some, that’s causing mixed emotions.
In a recent Wall Street Journal article , a husband-wife owner and operator team reported that the new rules are going to make things worse, cutting into their annual $300,000 revenue by $36,000. The article also cited that the American Trucking Association estimates that the rules will increase costs and lower productivity levels by 1.5 percent to 4 percent, resulting in industry losses of $500 million to $1.4 billion.
While many may not be happy with the new HOS rules, the Department of Transportation is in favor. The stricter rules according to the DOT will increase safety, saving an estimated 19 lives and preventing 1,400 crashes and 560 injuries each year.
