All things fleet tracking – industry news and best practices
It’s Peak Season for Equipment Theft – Are Your Assets Safe?

Did you know that each month, nearly 1,000 pieces of commercial equipment are reported stolen to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC)? Equipment theft is a huge issue in the U.S. and can end up costing fleets hundreds of thousands of dollars. And with July being a popular month for theft, it’s important that fleet managers understand the problem and take necessary measures to prevent it.
Companies that leave equipment on jobsites after hours are a major target. Thieves enter the jobsite, load equipment onto trailers and then make huge profits by either reselling the equipment, selling the parts or illegally exporting it to other countries. And unfortunately for fleets, recovery rates are low. According to the National Equipment Registrar (NER) and National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) 2012 Equipment Theft Report, only 20% of stolen equipment was recovered in 2012.
Although equipment theft is a very real issue, some are still not convinced about its severity. According to the 2011 Theft Report, on average, equipment is roughly twice as likely to be stolen as it is to be damaged by a natural event. And heavy equipment is roughly five times more likely to be stolen than to be in a collision. So, what can fleet managers do to ramp up security measures?
One solution is asset tracking, which allows fleet managers to keep an eye on their equipment from even the most remote location. Asset trackers can be installed on any type of asset and are rugged enough to withstand even the roughest of weather conditions. Once asset trackers are installed, fleet managers can log into a cloud-based application from their computer or mobile device to view the location and activity of their equipment. If equipment moves from a jobsite, fleet managers can receive an instant alert via email or SMS message.
Being able to monitor and track the location of assets is a sure-fire way to not only protect assets, but to recover them in the event that they are stolen. Read more about asset tracking technology here: http://www.nextraq.com/fleet-tracking-solutions/asset-tracking/.
